Eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman is our main character and we join her when she arrives at a grand house in Amsterdam to begin her new life as the wife of wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt.


Through Johannes is constant throughout this novel he is a distant character, who Nella is desperate to know more.


Johannes presents Nella with an extraordinary wedding gift, a cabinet-sized replica of their home. He gives Nella money with which to furnish the doll’s house and it is here that the magic of this novel begins.  


Nella employs a mystical miniaturist to furnish the house, and though she never sees the artists behind the pieces, they arrive, even when she doesn’t ask for them.


We follow Nella as she tries to uncover the many secrets of this strange household, realising in time how dangerous her new home and the people within it are.


The miniaturist seems to hold all of their fates in her hands, with her little pieces revealing secrets about their lives which no one could possibly have known. But does she plan to save or destroy them?


In this enticing novel Burton gives us an insight into the past, teaching us about the history of the time while simultaneously enthralling us in this fast paced story. Thrown into a world of mystery, history and the complicated, multi-faceted face of love, this book is a beautiful step into Adult fiction which should not be missed.
