  • Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick

In 2073, on the remote and secretive island of Blessed, where it is rumoured that no one ages and no children are born, a ritual sacrifice takes place. For a moment it echoes ten centuries before, when, in the dark of the moon, a king was slain and tragically taken from his queen. Forevermore their souls search to be reunited, and as mother and son, artist and child, forbidden lovers, victims of a vampire, they come close to finding what they've lost. Although love can take many forms, can it last forever? Marcus Sedgwick is a dark and beautiful writer, which he proves in this 2011 lone novel. Standing apart from his previous YA series, 'The Raven Mysteries', this novel is a nod to his adult fiction in it's style and darkness. A short book, this novel very cleverly takes us back through time. Divided into different sections this story carries us back to an unknown time before the 10th century, carefully crafting out the bitterly painful story of two lovers. Although gripping and nearly impossible to put down, Sedgwick hides the truth of what's happening, throwing the reader from one possibility to another with each story. The result is a tantalising novel that, although dark and in places, hard to read, we can't stop thinking about it after closing. This curious style of writing however is quiet a leap from the classic YA novel, and it's easy to become confused. It is not clear whether Sedgwick intended to throw the readers time frame out of balance, or if this is just the result of the twisting storyline. However, this novel does manage to accomplish something so few YA novels do, it is completly unisex, both an enjoyable adventure and a passionate love story. This book ticks almost all the boxes. • The Rest of Us Just Live Here, by Patrick Ness

The way this novel is written alone will astonish readers. Ness has a talent for taking reality and bending it to his will, and that is no different in this, his latest novel. Each chapter opens with a tantalising glimpse of the action, in a magical side to this world, however it is but a taste of the action packed story he could have written. Rather instead, Ness has chosen to write about characters who are, in this world, quiet normal, living normal lives and dealing with issues that many of us can relate to. It is a fantastic throw on the fiction-novel, taking the idea that everyone’s story is worth telling, not just the stories of those who live the action. In this jaw-dropping novel we are Mickey, a young man who just wants to graduate and go to prom before someone goes and blows up his high school, again. For Mickey there are problems that are bigger than this week’s end of the world, there is extraordinary in his life. Though Mickey’s life is not completely ordinary, his best friend is the God of mountain lions. Although, obviously, Ness has created a world very different from the one we know, he has filled it with reality. We are drawn in by the things we know and recognise, which makes this book feel so real and tangible. The magic and the wonder is really second to the real and the beautiful which this novel brings to light. We Give The Rest Of Us Just Live Here Four Stars ISBN – 978-1-4063-3116-5 Cover price (hard back) - £12.99

  • Mindwalker, by A. J. Steiger

Mindwalker is a novel with a marvelous concept that A. J. Steiger forms into a vivid rendering of the future. In the future there is no war, no social unrest, no painful memories and no freedom. At seventeen, Lain has already aced the Institute’s elite training programme for Mindwalkers, therapists who use direct neural links to erase traumatic memories. A prodigy and the daughter of a renowned scientist, whose death left her alone in the world, Lain is driven by the need to save others. When troubled classmate Steven asks her to wipe a horrific childhood experience, Lain’s superiors warn her to stay away. Steven’s scars are too deep, they say, the risk too great. Yet as she defies their warnings and explores Steven’s memories, it becomes clear that something is very, very wrong. Is the Institute really an organisation of healing, or one of manipulation and state control? Mindwalker starts off empowered, shaping this future world with expert story craftsmanship and gripping the reader early. However, sadly, the novel looses a lot of its power after the half way point and the story line grows vague in direction. Steigers concept for Mindwalker remains strong, leaving hope for the next novel in the series to bring back the main concepts with great force and ambition. Though characters, setting and story stages require some serious work, it is the idea and the passion that went into this novel that makes it a worthwhile read.
